Omo Valley -Surma stands out as one of the most exceptional places on earth due to its rich variety of people and animals. Situated in Africa’s Great Rift Valley, this region boasts a remarkable culture and diversity. The tribes inhabiting the lower Omo Valley rank among the most captivating in both Africa and the world. The traditional local name “Surma” refers to the people residing in southwestern Ethiopia, particularly the ‘Suri’, including the Chai, Tirmaga, and Baale groups. While distinct politically and territorially, these groups share ‘South East Surmic languages within the Nilo-Saharan, such as Mursi, Majangir, and Me’en.

Day 1Arrival and Drive to Jimma

Jimma (Oromo: Jimma also spelled Jimmaa, is the largest city in southwestern Oromia Region in Ethiopia. It is a special zone of the Oromia Region.

The main settlement in this area is the colorful village of Kibish. Set in a bowl in the forested hills, it is a fascinating place populated by the striking Surmi people

Day 3Full day in Surma

Surma is a collective term for three ethnic groups — Chai, Timaga, and Suri Baale — living in southwestern Ethiopia. Suri is composed of three subgroups; Chai, Timaga and Baale groups (self-names), politically and territorially different, but all speaking ‘South East Surmic languages within the Surmic language family, which includes MursiMajang, and Men languages.

The Konso are experienced sedentary farmers, only southwestern Ethiopia to engage in cultivation on terraces on the slopes of rocky hills. The dominant crops are cotton and different varieties of millet. UNESCO has distinguished this arid site 55 km², terraces and stone fortifications, because it” is a spectacular example of a living cultural tradition”.

Early in the morning leave to Mursi. Like many other tribes, the 10,000-strong Mursi people live as nomads on the lower valley of the river Omo, around 800km from Addis Ababa, the Ethiopian capital. The individual village communities set off again after 9-18 months, depending on how quickly their cattle grazes the land.
